Why should mompreneurs have all the fun?

Are we a statistical blip?

Here’s some interesting figures – type “dadpreneur” into google and you get 913 results. Type “mompreneur” and you get 55,900 results. (and in a nod to our Australian and British cousins, “mumpreneur” nets another 4,460 results). So that’s nearly 60,000 sites referencing the female entrepreneur and less then a 1000 for the male version. What gives?

And here’s some more numbers – taken from a WSJ article that unfortunately doesn’t seem to exist anymore….(or I possibly just can’t find it)

“No one tracks the number of ‘dadpreneurs’ who are out there, but one thing is certain: They’re still a minority. A Census Bureau survey last year found 142,000 married fathers with children under 15 who have remained out of the labor force for more than one year to care for their children. In contrast, there were about 5.6 million such mothers”.

So is it a case of dadpreneurs not identifying themselves as such?  Or are we really such a minority?  Personally, I tend to think it’s the former – I think there are a lot of men out there who own small businesses (or large ones), but still have a primary role in raising their kids – but they just call themselves businessmen or plain old entrepreneurs.

So, here’s to all of you – whether you identify yourselves as a dadpreneur or not.  If you’re trying to start a business (or indeed, are running one) and make dinner, toilet train your toddler, walk the dog and go to swimming lessons as well – I salute you.

For that matter, I also salute the women in your (our lives).  Speaking personally, my wife is the only reason why I’ve been able to consider this whole <<insert tag here>>preneur thing.  While I go chasing our dreams, (and teaching our son to say please and thank you) she goes to work everyday.  Thanks….
